My focus areas: detect-alert-avoid (DAA) collision avoidance system integration and testing, especially modelling and fast-time simulation of end-to-end DAA systems for sUAS and determing resulting ASTM DAA risk-ratios.

Our work: developing safety cases via testing and data-driven approach to obtain COAs and/or waivers for sUAS operations, which includes:

  • Enabling operations over people (OOP):
    • by using a FAA approved Means of Compliance (MOC) we have developed for OOP which involves impact and laceration testing.
  • Automated detect and avoid (DAA) for operations without an observer or beyond visual line-of-sight (BVLOS) operations
    • by using fast-time simulation (monte-carlo) to account for sensor performance, aircraft performance, and encounter geometry to determine system risk –> ASTM DAA risk-ratios.
  • Additionally, we’re involved in other airspace integration efforts. Past tests include UTM testing for NASA (TCL 2 & 3 tests) and FAA (UPP 1 & 2, and UFT tests).
